Belbroughton Wedding Cake Baker is Cream of the West Midlands

A Belbroughton wedding cake designer and baker has proven she’s the cream of the crop by winning a prestigious regional award.

Charlotte Pearman’s Farmhouse Cakes business was named Best West Midlands Wedding Cake Maker at the Wedding Industry Awards.

And the icing on the cake for the 23-year-old baker is that the win gives her a shot at the national crown, the winner of which will be announced in January.

“I’m still so shocked and on cloud nine – this is such a great achievement for my small company, I’m so proud that I could pop!” She wrote on her company’s Facebook page.

Charlotte said she had considered entering the competition before, but eventually her arm was twisted by people at Arley House, a Bewdley wedding venue and one of her main clients.

She started baking at a young age, inspired by her mother, and started her company as a teenager to help out on her parents’ farm.

Like many entrepreneurs, 2020 has been a difficult year for her – the mass cancellation of weddings amid the coronavirus pandemic means she only made three wedding cakes this year.

That was a sharp drop from the 28 she made in 2019, but orders for next year and beyond are already starting to flood.

“Hopefully things are starting to get better. I now have 35 orders for next year,” the former Belbroughton Primary and Haybridge High School student told the advertiser.

The awards ceremony took place virtually online as Covid’s restrictions continue to limit live events, but Charlotte was determined to make the most of it.

“It was a shame, but it is what it is. I had my whole family with me, I’m happy that we all live together,” she added.

“So we all gathered, got dressed, took something to take away and partied as best we could!”

As for the possibility of a national crown, Charlotte remains modest.

“It would be amazing, but I don’t have high hopes – I already have what I wanted,” she said.
