Locusts unleash new lifeline for wedding rings – News

Totally unemployed since the lockdown began in March and most weddings and ceremonies have been canceled, they are now in great demand to scare away the swarms

Every cloud has a silver lining, and that applies to a particular community these days, where swarms of locusts descend like plagues over states. The musicians (band wallahs) in several districts of Uttar Pradesh have really turned adversity into opportunity. Totally unemployed since the lockdown began in March and most weddings and ceremonies have been canceled, they are now in great demand to scare away the swarms.

The wedding season also brought no work, as the marriages were extremely cautious with limited guests and no space to sing and dance.

These unemployed band wallahs have now found a new job for themselves. They contact the farmers and take on the task of driving away locusts with loud music.

Gopi, a member of the Golden Brass Band in Kanpur, said: “The farmers book us to drive away locusts. We get paid between 7,000 and 12,000 rupees a night. We stay in the village where we receive the booking and as soon as locusts can be seen nearby, we play loud music and the crush disappears. “

He said it was more economical for farmers to rent a band party than hitting utensils to make a noise.

A farmer in the Unnao district, Gajendra Singh, said that hitting a utensil does not create music loud enough to scare off locusts.

“We’re all donating money and putting a band party on. The locusts will be driven away within half an hour because their music is pretty loud,” he said.

Prayagraj, who has suffered a series of locust attacks on the outskirts of the district, is also suspending band parties.

“It’s easier and more effective because the music is louder,” said Guddu, a resident of Pari village.

Mahesh Kumar of Soni Brass Band said, “Although the income is unsatisfactory, it is a huge relief in these times when we have been out of business for almost four months. The only thing is that we have to wait for the locusts for hours to arrive so we can start playing music. In a marriage, we have a fixed period of two hours to play, “he said.
